INTO Heritage Leaders
In a world where the preservation of nature, heritage and culture is more critical than ever, INTO has taken a significant step forward with its ground-breaking new leadership training course, INTO Heritage Leaders.
This innovative programme, designed to nurture a network of leaders dedicated to these essential causes, has proven to be an exceptional success.
50 participants from 29 different countries and territories have been coming together over the past two months to dig into all aspects of leadership. Beautifully masterminded by our partners, Cultural Associates Oxford and funded by the Helen Hamlyn Trust, the programme has also built closer links amongst the INTO movement across the globe.
The live sessions and module materials feature a variety of inspirational leaders from across our network and beyond.
We are so lucky to have such a brilliant faculty supporting this learning and network development. Who can fail to have been moved by Barbra Batweteera's leadership journey, taken note of Omar Eaton-Martinez's five propositions for leading EDI work or learned from Diane Lees' top tips for team building?
Participant feedback
The response from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have praised the programme’s structure, content, and the opportunities it provided for meaningful interaction and learning. One participant noted, “The level of detail was perfect. This module made me realise my passion. Genuinely really, really great.”
Another participant commented, “The contents are enriching and inspiring, very big compliments to those who edited the module materials! Thank you.”
Reflecting on the module about creating strong organisations, a participant wrote, “In my career, there have been many instances where I have affected or have been affected by change and in hindsight, perhaps I could have done things differently. The videos, readings, podcasts in this volume are a good reminder as to how it can and should be addressed or dealt with. So thank you all for compiling this lesson. Lots to reflect about.”
Vision behind INTO Heritage Leaders
The programme was created with three primary aims in mind:
Nurturing a network of leaders: Many INTO member organisations have grown organically, often driven by the extraordinary energy and passion of a single individual. As these organisations transition into their next phase of development, there is a pressing need to cultivate leadership skills among the next generation. This course was specifically designed to meet this need, ensuring that future leaders are well-prepared to take the helm.
Providing access to essential skills training: Existing leaders within INTO member organisations face challenges in accessing the training they need to enhance their skills. Often isolated without peers in their own countries, these leaders are eager to align their skills with those of their international colleagues. The course offers a unique opportunity for them to gain the necessary training and support.
Fostering international connections: One of the most valuable aspects of the course has been the chance for participants to meet and connect with an international network of colleagues. This not only broadens their perspectives but also fosters a sense of solidarity and shared purpose among leaders across the globe.
Programme Structure
The INTO Heritage Leaders programme is a two-month journey comprising a combination of live online workshops, pre-recorded modules, networking sessions, and peer learning groups. The live workshops, held in June, set the stage for an engaging and interactive learning experience. Following these workshops, weekly online modules were released, allowing participants to delve deeper into the course material at their own pace.
The programme covered six comprehensive modules:
Understanding the global context: Providing a broad overview of the current state of global heritage and conservation efforts
Purpose and impact: Helping participants define their organisations’ missions and measure their impact effectively
Audiences: Focusing on understanding and engaging diverse audiences
Creating strong organisations: Offering strategies for building resilient and effective organisations
External relationships: Exploring the importance of building and maintaining beneficial external relationships
The business of heritage: Addressing the financial and operational aspects of managing heritage organisations
