Czech it out: National Trust study visit
From 11-14 November 2024, we hosted the Czech National Trust and ANOPA (Association of Non-State Open Monuments) on an enriching and delightful study visit to London.
The aim was to learn more about, on the one hand, membership, volunteering and community engagement. And on the other, innovative income generation and business models. It was a programme packed with heritage, learning and camaraderie!
It was also an occasion to celebrate the accomplishments of the Czech National Trust (CNT). Over the past decade, the CNT has achieved remarkable success in preserving Czech cultural heritage. This includes the restoration of historic sites like Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach’s tomb and the Chinese Pavilion in Kroměříž.
They have organised volunteer working holidays and hosted international conferences on cultural heritage. CNT has raised funds for restoration projects through charity events. They have also expanded in the Czech Republic through the partnership with ANOPA. As well as internationally through the the Czech National Trust Abroad (CNTA).
These efforts ensure the preservation and promotion of Czech heritage for future generations.
Knowledge exchange
The delegation were warmly welcomed by Irena Edwards, Chairman of the Czech National Trust and Catherine Leonard, Secretary-General of INTO. Their first stop was the magnificent Osterley Park, a rare survival of a country estate in London.
Here, the group engaged in a workshop on membership, volunteering and community engagement, led by General Manager, Christopher Cleeve. The day concluded with a beautiful tour of the house and gardens.

The second day began with a visit to the Historic Houses Annual General Meeting. The group had the opportunity to explore exhibition stands, attend insightful talks and meet key figures like Ben Cowell OBE, Director of Historic Houses. The evening was marked by a thought-provoking panel discussion at the Czech Embassy, focusing on “Heritage! Stories of Revival and Resilience,” followed by a delightful reception.
Exploring Cliveden
On the third day, the group travelled to Cliveden, a stunning estate with glorious grounds. They were greeted by Robert Miles, General Manager, who introduced them to Cliveden’s business model and income generation strategies. The day included a garden tour, a house tour and plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
This study visit was not just about exploring historic sites. It was about building connections, sharing knowledge and celebrating a shared passion for heritage conservation.
The Czech National Trust and ANOPA’s visit to London was a testament to the power of collaboration. We look forward to many more such enriching experiences in the future!
