INTO Heritage Leaders 2024

EventsProgrammes September 9, 2024

A journey of growth and connection

This year, we launched our first INTO Heritage Leaders Programme. And the first cohort of staff and volunteers from INTO’s member organisations ‘graduated’ in July.

Programme Structure and Content

We designed this online leadership programme in collaboration with Cultural Associates Oxford and offered participants a comprehensive learning experience through self-led modules and live sessions.

The programme, which ran from May to July 2024, included six self-led modules. We covered topics such as understanding the global context, purpose and impact, audiences, creating strong organisations, external relationships, and the business of heritage. Participants engaged with videos, case studies, self-reflection tasks, and additional resources. Live sessions complemented the modules, providing opportunities for peer learning and networking.

Outcomes and feedback

Participants gave overwhelmingly positive feedback. All respondents to the final evaluation survey reported growth in their leadership skills, with 59% noting significant improvement. They appreciated the opportunity to connect with peers globally, share experiences, and apply new knowledge to their roles. They praised the programme for its well-structured content, relevance, and the quality of resources.

Areas for improvement

This pilot gave us some ideas for improving the next iteration. We plan to space out the module content to help participants manage the volume and pace. Moreover, we will provide more networking opportunities and pre-programme orientation.

Peer learning and networking

Peer learning sessions provided a valuable component, with 92% of participants enjoying these interactions. We are taking on board suggestions for longer sessions and more structured facilitation to enhance the experience. Networking emerged as another key highlight. Many participants formed particularly meaningful connections and expressed a desire for ongoing engagement.

I was thrilled to meet so many wonderful leaders across the globe, and to be reminded of what a diverse, exciting and wonderful family the INTO community is.

Future directions

The evaluation report recommends several enhancements for future iterations of the programme, including more time for content absorption, increased networking opportunities, and improved orientation. Participants also show interest in creating an alumni network to maintain connections and support continued professional development.

The INTO Heritage Leaders Programme significantly impacts its participants, fostering growth, confidence, and a sense of community. As we look forward to future cohorts, we commit to refining the programme to better meet the needs of heritage leaders worldwide. Thank you to all participants, facilitators, and supporters for making this journey a success.

The quality of resources that were made available was astounding. Different perspectives were offered and the speakers were inspiring. I found myself using my acquired knowledge immediately.
